Tiny study probes whether acid drugs loosen up stiff esophagus

NCT ID NCT03312686

First seen Nov 24, 2025 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This small pilot study will test whether proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) improve the flexibility of the esophagus in 10 people with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Researchers will use a special balloon device to measure stiffness in both the upper and lower esophagus before and after treatment. The goal is to see if reducing inflammation also helps the esophagus stretch and function better.
