No knife needed? new procedure may treat appendicitis without surgery

NCT ID NCT07230379

First seen Nov 17, 2025 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study tests a new, non-surgical treatment called ERAT for mild appendicitis. Instead of removing the appendix, doctors use a flexible tube through the colon to clear the blockage and infection. The trial will compare ERAT to standard laparoscopic surgery in 376 adults to see if it is as safe and effective, with follow-up for one year.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Endoscopic Retrograde Appendicitis Therapy (ERAT) - a procedure using a flexible tube through the colon to clear the appendix blockage

What this could lead to

If successful, ERAT could offer a non-surgical option for mild appendicitis, allowing patients to keep their appendix and avoid surgery.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with only 376 participants, and ERAT may not work for everyone. There is a risk of appendicitis returning, requiring surgery later.

Conditions
