Shocking the gut: could electricity replace finger stretching for bowel relief?

NCT ID NCT06078176

First seen Apr 23, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study compares two methods to help people with spinal cord injury empty their bowels: the current standard of gently stretching the rectum with a gloved finger, and a new approach using mild electrical stimulation. The goal is to see if electricity works as well or better at speeding up bowel movements. The study will enroll 12 adults with spinal cord injury who already use the finger-stretching method.
