Emergency rooms join fight against HIV: new study tests PrEP access

NCT ID NCT05588193

First seen Mar 18, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study tests two simple ways to help emergency room patients who are at risk for HIV get PrEP, a daily pill that prevents HIV. About 1,560 adults visiting the ER for sexual health concerns will be offered either a low-burden strategy to start PrEP right away or usual care. The goal is to see which approach gets more people on PrEP within three months, helping reduce HIV rates in communities hit hardest by the epidemic.
