New study tests if removing stents earlier prevents fluid return after pancreatic necrosis treatment

NCT ID NCT07307248

First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This trial compares removing a metal stent at 2 weeks (with a plastic stent placed) versus the usual 4 weeks (without a plastic stent) in adults with walled-off pancreatic necrosis. The goal is to see if earlier removal lowers the chance of fluid collections coming back or needing another procedure. About 408 participants will be followed for 12 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS) and double-pigtail plastic stent (DPT)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a safer, more effective drainage procedure for walled-off pancreatic necrosis, reducing the chance of fluid coming back.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center trial with 408 participants, so results may not apply everywhere. The early removal approach could increase complications like bleeding or infection.
