Small study checks if common antibiotic quickly tackles rare lung infection

NCT ID NCT04287049

First seen Nov 17, 2025 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This pilot study looked at how well the antibiotic azithromycin works alone during the first 14 days of treatment for Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) lung disease. Ten adults with MAC lung disease took azithromycin daily, and researchers measured changes in bacteria levels in their sputum. The goal was to understand the drug's early bacteria-killing activity, not to test a cure or long-term control.
