Physios take on ER: new study tests if they can replace doctors for back pain

NCT ID NCT07443098

First seen Mar 16, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study tested whether specially trained physiotherapists can safely diagnose and treat non-urgent muscle and joint problems in the emergency room, compared to standard care from doctors. Over 100 patients with conditions like back pain or sprains were randomly assigned to either a physiotherapist or a resident physician. The goal was to see how well each group's decisions matched those of a senior doctor, to determine if physiotherapists could help reduce wait times and free up physicians.
