Plant-Based diet may lower cholesterol in genetic heart condition
NCT ID NCT05181553
First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 31 times
Summary
This study looked at whether a whole food plant-based diet, low in red and processed meats, can lower LDL cholesterol in 50 adults with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), an inherited condition causing high cholesterol. Participants followed both a standard North American diet and the plant-based diet in a crossover design. Researchers also used blood tests to find a unique pattern (metabolomic signature) that shows if someone is sticking to the healthy diet. The goal is to better manage heart disease risk in people with HeFH.
