First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 29 times
Summary
This study tests whether a low dose of the sedative dexmedetomidine can improve diaphragm function and reduce pain in people with three or more broken ribs who are treated without surgery. Sixty adults with severe pain will receive either the drug or a placebo for five days. Researchers will measure breathing muscle movement and pain scores to see if the drug offers any advantage.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a better way to manage pain and improve breathing in people with multiple broken ribs.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug may not outperform standard care or could cause side effects like low blood pressure.
