New balloon treatment could replace stents for heart attack patients

NCT ID NCT06742125

First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study tests whether a drug-coated balloon works as well as a drug-eluting stent for people having a severe heart attack (STEMI). About 1,244 adults will be randomly assigned to receive either treatment during emergency artery-opening procedures. The goal is to see if the balloon, which leaves no permanent implant behind, can reduce the risk of death, stroke, another heart attack, or the need for repeat procedures.
