Freezing nerves may offer lasting relief from phantom limb pain

NCT ID NCT06071715

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 24 times

Summary

This study tested a treatment called cryoanalgesia, which uses cold to freeze nerves in the thigh, to see if it can reduce phantom limb pain in people who have had an above-knee amputation. Twelve adults with daily phantom pain were randomly assigned to receive either the real freezing treatment or a sham (fake) procedure. The goal was to measure pain changes one month later, with the option for all participants to receive the real treatment after 4-6 months. The approach aims to provide long-lasting pain relief by blocking pain signals for months.
