Could freezing nerves finally stop phantom limb pain?
NCT ID NCT06071715
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This pilot study tested whether freezing the major thigh nerves (cryoanalgesia) can provide lasting relief from phantom limb pain in people with above-knee amputations. Twelve adults with daily moderate-to-severe phantom pain received either the real freezing treatment or a sham procedure. The goal was to see if a long-lasting nerve block could reduce pain for months, potentially retraining the brain to stop false pain signals.
