New heart artery study aims to crush tough calcium deposits

Summary
This study compares two techniques for treating severely hardened heart arteries. After an initial drilling step, one group receives a special balloon that uses sound waves to break up calcium, while the other gets a very high-pressure balloon. The goal is to see which method better opens the artery for stent placement. The trial will enroll 162 adults with heavily calcified coronary lesions.
