Quick quiz may spot breathing trouble in COPD patients before surgery
NCT ID NCT07087626
First seen Jun 02, 2026 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at whether a short questionnaire called the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) can predict breathing problems during and after surgery in people with COPD. Researchers will follow 120 patients aged 40-70 having elective surgery. They will compare those with low versus high CAT scores to see if higher scores mean more complications like low oxygen or pneumonia.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could give doctors a simple tool to better plan anesthesia and care for COPD patients before surgery, potentially reducing complications.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study with only 120 participants, so results may not apply to all COPD patients. The CAT score is a questionnaire, not a direct measure of lung function.
