Chilling the heart: could cold therapy be the key to healing after a heart attack?

NCT ID NCT06567249

First seen Oct 31, 2025 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 27 times

Summary

This study is testing a new approach to reduce heart damage during a heart attack. When a heart artery is blocked, restoring blood flow can sometimes cause additional injury. Researchers are cooling the heart's arteries with a cold saline solution right after opening the blockage, aiming to protect the heart muscle. The study will enroll 60 people with a specific type of heart attack (STEMI) and use MRI scans to measure the amount of heart damage.
