Scientists deliberately infect volunteers with malaria to study immune response

NCT ID NCT04083508

First seen Jan 12, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This study aims to see if it is safe and feasible to intentionally infect healthy Thai adults with Plasmodium vivax malaria through mosquito bites. Researchers will monitor how the immune system responds and collect infected blood for future studies. Only 6 healthy volunteers aged 20-55 with specific blood traits are eligible. The goal is to better understand malaria and develop tools for future research, not to treat or cure the disease.
