Feeding tube before extubation: new study challenges old fasting rules
NCT ID NCT06382727
First seen May 08, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study looked at whether critically ill patients in the ICU should keep receiving liquid nutrition through a feeding tube right up until their breathing tube is removed. Currently, many patients are made to fast for hours beforehand, which can lead to missed nutrition. The trial compared two groups: one that fasted for at least 4 hours and one that continued feeding. The goal was to see if continuing feeding could reduce total fasting time without causing harm. 60 adults on ventilators for more than 24 hours took part.
