First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 29 times
Summary
This study looked at different methods for collecting sputum (phlegm) from people with a chronic lung infection called pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection. The goal was to see which collection method—coughing up phlegm, using a mist to produce phlegm, or a throat swab—works best for accurate diagnosis. 177 adults already diagnosed with NTM took part in a single visit to provide samples. No treatment was given; the study only aimed to improve future diagnosis and research.
