Battle of the balloons: which procedure wins for swallowing disorder?
NCT ID NCT01793922
First seen Apr 09, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study compared two minimally invasive procedures for treating achalasia, a condition where the esophagus fails to relax, making swallowing difficult. 132 adults with newly diagnosed achalasia were randomly assigned to receive either POEM (a cutting procedure) or pneumodilation (balloon stretching). The goal was to see which treatment better relieved symptoms over time. Results showed POEM may offer longer-lasting symptom control.
