First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 14 times
Summary
This Phase 3 trial tests whether colchicine, an anti-inflammatory drug, can reduce heart scarring and prevent serious complications in people with acute myocarditis (heart inflammation). 300 participants will receive either colchicine or a placebo for six months, alongside standard care. The study aims to see if colchicine lowers the risk of heart failure, dangerous heart rhythms, and other major heart problems.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Colchicine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a low-cost, widely available treatment to reduce heart damage and lower the risk of heart failure or dangerous heart rhythms in people with acute myocarditis.
What could go wrong
This is a Phase 3 trial, but colchicine may not reduce heart scarring or prevent complications. Side effects like diarrhea and nausea are common, and the drug may not work for all types of myocarditis.
