Scientists track coke zero sweetener through the body in 24-Hour urine study
NCT ID NCT07694401
First seen Jul 10, 2026 · Last updated Jul 24, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study investigates how the artificial sweetener acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) is processed and eliminated after drinking 500 mL of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar. Ten healthy adults provide urine samples before and repeatedly over 24 hours after drinking either Coke Zero or still water, with a month between each test. Researchers use advanced spectroscopy to measure Ace-K levels and other metabolic changes. The goal is to understand the body's short-term handling of this common sweetener.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Coca-Cola Zero Sugar (containing acesulfame potassium)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could help scientists understand how artificial sweeteners are processed by the body and whether they cause any short-term metabolic changes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small study (10 people) looking only at urine markers over 24 hours. It cannot tell us about long-term health effects or apply to people with health conditions.
