Donor vaccine could shield transplant patients from common virus

NCT ID NCT06059391

First seen Mar 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests a vaccine called CMV-MVA Triplex given to stem cell donors. The goal is to boost the donor's immunity against cytomegalovirus (CMV) so that when their stem cells are transplanted into a patient with blood cancer, the patient inherits that protection. The study involves 216 donor-recipient pairs and aims to prevent CMV infection, a common and serious complication after transplant.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

CMV-MVA Triplex vaccine

What this could lead to

If it works, this vaccine could help prevent dangerous CMV infections in stem cell transplant patients by giving them immunity from their donor.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial with only 216 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The vaccine is given to donors, not patients, and its effectiveness is still unproven.
