NCT ID NCT05296967
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 24, 2026 · Updated 26 times
Summary
This study tested whether chewing gum can speed up recovery from postoperative ileus, a temporary gut slowdown after bowel surgery. 128 adults who had colorectal or small bowel surgery and developed ileus were asked to chew gum. The goal was to see if chewing helps the gut start working again sooner, measured by when they could eat solid food and pass gas or stool.
