ICU needle pokes may soon be optional: study tests blood draws from central lines

NCT ID NCT07183605

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study looks at whether blood taken from a central venous catheter (a large tube placed in a vein) can give accurate readings of the blood thinner heparin, compared to the standard method of drawing blood from a vein in the arm. About 30 intensive care unit (ICU) patients on continuous heparin will have blood drawn from both sites at the same time. If the results match closely enough, it could mean fewer painful needle sticks for ICU patients.
