Summary

This phase 3 trial tests an injection called CBL-514 to see if it can safely reduce belly fat. About 320 adults with moderate to severe abdominal fat will receive either the drug or a placebo. The main goal is to see if more people in the drug group report a meaningful fat reduction compared to those getting the placebo.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
CBL-514 injection
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a non-surgical option to reduce belly fat in people who are not overweight.
What could go wrong
This is a cosmetic treatment, not a cure for any disease. Results may be modest, and side effects from the injection are possible. The trial is not yet recruiting.
Why investors are watching

Caliway Biopharmaceuticals is running a phase 3 trial of CBL-514, an injected drug meant to reduce belly fat. For a small company, this late-stage readout is a major test of whether its lead product works and can reach the market.

If it works: If the trial shows CBL-514 safely reduces abdominal fat better than a placebo, Caliway could have a marketable cosmetic treatment and a path to regulatory approval.

If it fails: Phase 3 trials often fail, and a negative or delayed result could set the company back significantly, since CBL-514 appears to be its main focus.
