CBD cream or oil: does it reach your bloodstream?

NCT ID NCT07359976

First seen Jan 22, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 28 times

Summary

This study looked at how a natural hemp extract cosmetic product, containing CBD in coconut oil, enters the blood when applied to the skin or taken by mouth. Twenty healthy adults each tried both methods, with a 15-day break in between. Researchers measured CBD, THC, and their breakdown products in blood and checked urine for THC. The goal was simply to understand absorption, not to treat any disease.

CBD extract (cannabidiol) in coconut oil

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help consumers understand how much CBD enters the body from creams or oral oils, and whether it might cause a positive THC drug test.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 20 healthy adults, not designed to treat any disease. Results may not apply to people with medical conditions or long-term use.
