New study aims to simplify ICU monitoring with pulse oximeter trick
NCT ID NCT07555041
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Sep 03, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study looks at two methods to check blood flow in critically ill patients: the traditional capillary refill time (pressing on skin and timing color return) and the perfusion index (a continuous reading from a finger clip). Researchers want to see if the perfusion index can replace the manual test, saving time for healthcare workers. The study will include 250 adults in the ICU.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a simpler, automated way to monitor blood flow in critically ill patients, saving medical staff time.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not find a clear correlation, and results may not change current practices.
