Can a website help people cut back on cannabis?
NCT ID NCT04517474
First seen Sep 16, 2026 · Last updated Sep 17, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers are testing a Spanish version of CANreduce, a web-based self-help program that uses cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing to help people reduce their cannabis use. The trial compares three groups: one gets the program plus psychological support, one gets the program alone, and one waits. Participants are adults who use cannabis at least weekly and have internet access.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- CANreduce, a web-based self-help program using cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could give people who avoid clinics a private, low-cost way to cut back on cannabis use.
- What could go wrong
- Web programs often lose users over time, and self-reported use can be unreliable. The trial may show little difference between the guided and unguided versions.
