Can kicking nicotine change cannabis habits? study investigates
NCT ID NCT06239350
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jul 07, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at young adults aged 18 to 25 who use both tobacco/nicotine products and cannabis. Researchers want to understand what happens to cannabis use when participants try to quit nicotine. All participants receive remote counseling and incentives to stop using nicotine for 12 weeks, and their cannabis use is tracked along the way.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- counseling and contingency management
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could reveal how cannabis and tobacco interact during quit attempts, potentially guiding better dual-use cessation strategies.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational behavioral study, not a treatment trial. Results may not apply to all users, and quitting nicotine may not affect cannabis use as expected.
