Don't wash off the baby's white coat! study tests if it prevents eczema

NCT ID NCT07333378

First seen Jan 12, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study looks at whether leaving the white, creamy substance (vernix caseosa) that covers newborns at birth on their skin can help prevent eczema (atopic dermatitis) during the first year of life. About 1,383 babies will either have the vernix left on or be cleaned as usual, and researchers will track how many develop eczema. The goal is to find a simple, natural way to protect baby skin.
