Caffeine study aims to keep preterm babies breathing easy at home

NCT ID NCT06518603

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study tests whether giving caffeine citrate to moderately preterm infants for up to 28 days after hospital discharge can prevent dangerous breathing pauses (apnea) that lead to sick visits. About 340 babies will receive either caffeine or a placebo daily, with parents tracking symptoms. Researchers will also check if caffeine improves the babies' development at 12 months old.
