Heart clot strokes leave unique brain signatures, study finds

NCT ID NCT04456309

First seen Jan 06, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study looked at brain MRI scans of 122 stroke patients to see if those with a clot in the heart (intracardiac thrombus) had different patterns of brain damage compared to those with a common heart rhythm problem (atrial fibrillation). Researchers examined the location, size, and number of stroke lesions. The goal was to better understand how these two conditions cause strokes, which may help doctors identify the cause more accurately in the future.
