Scientists scan coma Patients' brains to uncover clues of consciousness

NCT ID NCT01620957

First seen Nov 18, 2025 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study looked at the brain activity of 43 people in a coma after severe brain injury. Researchers used MRI scans to see how different parts of the brain communicate, especially the default-mode network, which is active when we are awake and daydreaming. The goal was to see if changes in brain connectivity could predict if and when a patient might regain consciousness. No treatment was given; this was purely an observation study to learn more about the brain during coma.
