Targeted bone marrow blast for myeloma relapse shows early promise but trial halted

NCT ID NCT01794572

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated Jun 21, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This early-phase study tested a combination of high-dose melphalan chemotherapy and escalating doses of total bone marrow irradiation, followed by a stem cell rescue, in 13 patients with multiple myeloma that had returned after first treatment. The goal was to find the safest highest radiation dose. However, the trial was terminated early, so we have limited information on how well it worked or its risks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Melphalan and total bone marrow irradiation

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could offer a more targeted, intense treatment for multiple myeloma that has returned after initial therapy, potentially improving remission rates.

What could go wrong

The trial was terminated early with only 13 participants, so results are very limited. High-dose radiation and chemotherapy carry serious risks like organ damage and infection.
