Bone probe breakthrough: monitoring flaps from the inside out
NCT ID NCT01879384
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 36 times
Summary
This study tested a new way to monitor bone flaps after head and neck reconstruction surgery. Doctors placed a tiny probe (microdialysis catheter) directly into the bone tissue of 34 patients to measure key chemicals like lactate and glucose. The goal was to see if this method could reliably detect whether the bone flap was getting enough blood flow, potentially improving early detection of complications.
