Arterial vs. vein: which blood draw reduces contamination in ICU?
NCT ID NCT07183410
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 25 times
Summary
This study looks at 1,500 intensive care unit patients to see if taking blood cultures from an arterial line leads to fewer false alarms and better detection of real bloodstream infections compared to the usual method of drawing from a vein. The goal is to improve how quickly and accurately doctors identify dangerous infections. No new treatments are being tested; the study simply observes routine care before and after a change in hospital protocol.
