Artery vs. vein: which blood draw is better for spotting infections?
NCT ID NCT07183410
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 12, 2026 · Updated 22 times
Summary
This study looks at whether drawing blood from an arterial line (a tube already in an artery) leads to more or fewer contaminated samples and better detection of bloodstream infections compared to a standard needle stick in a vein. Researchers will compare results from 1,500 ICU patients before and after a new protocol that uses both methods. The goal is to see if using arterial lines can improve diagnosis without increasing false alarms.
