Pink medicine may stop Traveler's tummy troubles and superbugs

NCT ID NCT03535272

First seen Apr 18, 2026 · Last updated May 26, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study tested whether taking bismuth subsalicylate (the pink stuff in Pepto-Bismol) before and during international travel could prevent travelers' diarrhea and stop travelers from picking up antibiotic-resistant gut bacteria. About 482 adults traveling from the U.S. to parts of Asia and Africa were randomly given either the medicine or a placebo. The study was stopped early, so results are limited, but the goal was to see if a simple over-the-counter pill could keep travelers healthy and reduce the spread of drug-resistant germs.
