Pepto-Bismol may stop Travelers' diarrhea and superbugs
NCT ID NCT03535272
First seen Apr 18, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study tested whether taking bismuth subsalicylate (like Pepto-Bismol) before and during international travel could prevent travelers' diarrhea and reduce the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the gut. About 482 adult travelers from the US to Asia or Africa were randomly assigned to receive the medicine or a placebo. The study was terminated early, but results may show if this simple approach can protect travelers and limit antibiotic resistance.
