Summary
This study tested whether combining new lab tests for bacteria with tests that measure the body's immune response could help doctors diagnose ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) more accurately. Researchers enrolled 173 adults who were newly on a breathing machine in the ICU and collected their blood and lung fluid samples. They followed patients for up to 14 days to see if they developed pneumonia, comparing the new test results against standard diagnosis methods to see if they were better at identifying the infection.
