Pedaling in bed: new device aims to fight hospital weakness
NCT ID NCT07281638
First seen Jan 11, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study tests a portable exercise bike that clamps to hospital beds, allowing patients to pedal their arms and legs while lying down. The goal is to see if using the bike for at least 15 minutes a day can help prevent muscle loss, weakness, and other problems like blood clots and confusion. The study will include 80 adult patients expected to stay in the hospital for at least 3 days, and will track how often they use the device, any safety issues, and whether it improves their recovery.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Bedside Bike (a portable exercise device for bed)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, safe way for hospital patients to maintain muscle strength and reduce complications like weakness and blood clots.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage quality improvement study with only 80 participants. The device may not be used enough to show clear benefits, and results may not apply to all hospitals.
