Eye-Opening study: pupil test may unmask pain in confused ICU patients
NCT ID NCT05811208
First seen May 06, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This study tested whether a device that measures pupil changes (automated pupillometry) can help detect pain in intensive care patients who are confused after surgery. Pain is hard to assess in these patients because they cannot communicate clearly. The study included 49 adults and compared pupil measurements with standard pain scales to see if they matched.
