Swallowing wrongly? study links tongue thrust to worse gum disease

NCT ID NCT07534306

First seen Apr 24, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looked at 125 adults with gum disease to see how many also have atypical swallowing—where the tongue pushes against teeth incorrectly. Researchers checked tongue posture and used questionnaires to find links between these swallowing patterns and dental problems like loose teeth. The goal was to better understand how swallowing habits might worsen gum health, not to test a treatment.
