Scientists probe hidden side effects of common schizophrenia drugs
NCT ID NCT06236451
Summary
This study aimed to understand if and how two common schizophrenia medications (risperidone and aripiprazole) affect the tiny energy-producing parts of our cells, called mitochondria. Researchers compared 60 adults with schizophrenia who were either new to treatment or had been off medication for a month. They measured markers of mitochondrial function and schizophrenia symptoms over 12 weeks to see if the drugs impacted the body's energy systems and if this was linked to side effects or symptom changes.
