Scientists probe hidden side effects of common mental health drugs
NCT ID NCT06236451
Summary
This study aimed to understand if and how two common schizophrenia medications (risperidone and aripiprazole) affect the tiny power plants inside our cells, called mitochondria. Researchers compared 60 patients with schizophrenia, measuring markers of mitochondrial function, symptom severity, and side effects over 12 weeks. The goal was to gather knowledge about potential hidden biological effects of these drugs, not to test a new treatment.
