Extra knee ligament repair may boost stability after failed ACL surgery

NCT ID NCT02680821

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 32 times

Summary

This study tested whether adding a reconstruction of the anterolateral ligament (ALL) to a repeat anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery improves knee stability and patient-reported outcomes. 102 people who needed a second ACL surgery took part. Half received the standard ACL revision alone, and half also had the ALL reconstruction. The goal was to see if the extra procedure leads to better rotational knee stability and higher scores on knee function questionnaires.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Anterolateral ligament (ALL) reconstruction procedure

What this could lead to

If successful, adding ALL reconstruction could improve knee stability and long-term function for people needing repeat ACL surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a completed trial with 102 participants, so results are limited in size. The extra surgery may not provide meaningful benefit over standard ACL revision alone and carries typical surgical risks.
