Heart valve surgery gets a smarter Decision-Making tool

NCT ID NCT03292497

First seen May 01, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study looks at a common heart problem where the mitral valve leaks because of heart disease. Currently, surgeons choose to repair or replace the valve based on their own experience. This trial tests a new approach: using a set of specific measurements (an algorithm) to decide which surgery is best. About 110 adults with severe mitral regurgitation will be randomly assigned to either the standard surgeon-choice method or the algorithm-guided method, and their heart function will be compared after 12 months.
