AI and glowing dyes help trainee surgeons spot hidden danger during gallbladder surgery
NCT ID NCT07188181
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This completed study tested whether artificial intelligence and fluorescence imaging could help less experienced surgeons identify the bile duct during laparoscopic gallbladder removal. Eight junior surgeons at different training levels watched videos of surgeries, with and without AI assistance, and tried to locate the bile duct. The goal was to see if this technology could improve surgical accuracy and safety during training.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this approach could improve surgical training and reduce bile duct injuries during gallbladder removal.
- What could go wrong
- This was a very small study with only 8 participants, so results may not apply broadly. It focused on training, not patient outcomes.
