Brazil launches massive leprosy hunt: can active screening catch hidden cases?
NCT ID NCT06761469
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Aug 05, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This trial tests whether actively searching for leprosy cases in communities finds more people with the disease than waiting for them to come to clinics. Researchers will raise awareness, train healthcare workers, and use questionnaires and rapid tests in high-risk areas. About 1,925 people will take part across multiple municipalities in Brazil.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that active screening finds many hidden leprosy cases, helping reduce spread and improve early treatment.
- What could go wrong
- This is a pragmatic trial focused on detection, not a new treatment. Results may vary by location and may not apply to other regions.
