Surgery may not be needed for torn achilles tendon, study finds

NCT ID NCT07312097

First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study looked at 40 adults with a recent, complete Achilles tendon tear to see if non-surgical treatment works as well as surgery. Patients were randomly assigned to either a structured rehab program without surgery or open surgical repair. The results showed no major difference in strength, tendon length, or overall recovery between the two groups. However, only the surgery group had wound complications, suggesting that conservative care with early rehab is a safe and effective option.
